Week of Sept. 29 - Oct. 3 Blog 3 (Grade 5/6)

 Please take note of the following:

SCHOOL EVENTS / TRIPS

1. Our class has been reorganized! The numbers are sitting at high 20s. PLEASE NOTE - a link for a trip to the Young People's Theater will come out live on Sept. 30. We are going on Oct. 8. A parent volunteer is needed to accompany our class on that day if possible. We will be out for the day. Please ensure the police check is in place and submitted to the office to volunteer. NOTE - permission for the trip is completed through EMA while payment for the trip is done on cash-online. These are 2 separate transactions. 

2. Curriculum Night is this Thursday, Oct. 2nd from 6 -7 pm. See you then!

3. Terry Fox Day - Oct. 17.

4. Second Street is pleased to announce the start of The Milk Bag Mattress Project which transforms waste into hope. By recycling clean, outer milk bags into mattresses, we reduce plastic waste while providing comfort and dignity to those experiencing homelessness. We are looking for donations of:

  • Clean outer milk bags 
  • Scissors  
  • Crochet hooks or weaving frames  
  • Storage bins 

 Donations can be dropped off in the bin labeled Milk bags by the front lobby of the school.

5. Truth and Reconciliation Day is on Sept. 30. This is Orange Shirt Day!

6. The snack program starts on Monday, Sept. 29. Please fill in the forms to have your child participate in this program.

ABSENCES

7. Please download and use the app School Messenger to record your child's absences from school.

CLASSWORK

8. In light of reorganization, a NEW class schedule will be given to students on Mon. Sept. 29. We just finished work on fractions in Math. A test will be given on Fri. Oct. 3. The test will cover place value and fractions. The grade 6s will have integer questions on their test too. To prepare, students need to correct math errors in their folders as well as complete practice questions assigned on knowledgehook. We are currently reviewing decimal tenths and hundredths in class with both groups of students. Grade 6s will look at decimal numbers to the thousandths in class this week as well as rounding decimal numbers for both grades. In Literacy, students should still be reading a book for the book review that is due Oct. 10. Most have completed a response to reflect on land acknowledgements and their importance. Most students have completed a short biography of a classmate to get to know one another. Students have completed 3 weeks of penmanship practice. In Social Studies, the grade 6s are researching Human Rights and their importance; while the grade 5s are reviewing how different levels of government share in the responsibilities of running the country. NEW - Music class is now in place for the grade 6s. They will be with the itinerant teacher shortly. I will be teaching Music to my grade 5s as well as Mme Satdeo's grade 5s once a week. Ms. Habanbou will be teaching my class drama and dance moving forward. PLEASE ensure your child is bringing their computers to class charged and ready for learning each day please.

Week of Sept. 22 - 26 Blog 2 (Grade 5/6)

 Please take note of the following

CLASSWORK

1. We spent a fair bit of time last week on fractions, reviewing their notation, improper fractions, mixed numbers, representing fractions, benchmark fractions and making equal fractions. Students also worked with a partner on solving their first word problem in financial literacy. This week, we will shift to decimal tenths and hundredths, as well as the thousandths for the grade 6s. We will also reviewing rounding decimals. Note: it is very important for students to correct errors in their work.  AT THE END OF THIS LEARNING, students can expect a test which should take place the week after. In Social Studies, students are still completing their reflection on the land as a way of knowing and reflecting on how to have a reciprocal relationship with the land. In Social Studies, the gr. 5s are examining the Municipal level of government while the grade 6s are looking at being responsible as a citizen and researching a global issue. In Art, we will be making flags to celebrate Journee Franco-Ontarienne. Most students have completed their perspective drawing which are posted in our class.  In language, students are completing a book review that is due Friday, Oct. 10. They will be assigned week 3 in penmanship next week too. Students are reading either I am not a Number or We were all alone (both are Indigenous texts to give context to the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.) In Writing, students are encouraged to complete their short biography of a classmate which we've posted outside of our classroom. Some students have complete acrostic poems about Responsibility which are also posted outside of our learning community.  In Drama, there are a few students who are working on presenting their handshake to help us get to know them. PLEASE NOTE - marks are being posted in google classroom on a regular basis.

SCHOOL EVENTS

2. Students are encouraged to dress in green and white for Journee Franco-Ontarienne - our first spirit day at school (Sept. 25).

3. There is NO school on Friday, Oct. 26. It is a PA Day.

4. The snack program starts on Sept. 29. Please give permission for your child to participate in the program by completing the forms that were sent home.

5. Oct. 2 is Curriculum night at our school from 6 -7 pm. See you then!

REMINDERS

6. Sept. 25 is the deadline to return medical paperwork to school. Thanks for filling in forms sent online at the start of the year. Please register on EMA (needed for excursions) and cash online to pay for school activities.

Sept. 15 - 19 Blog 1 Grade 5/6

 Please take note of the following:

CLASSWORK

1. Students are encouraged to have a book on hand to read at school. They have been assigned a book review that is due on Friday, Oct. 10. They do have the template to complete the book review. They have been reading at school each day in class. We'll also start library this week on Day 3s giving students the opportunity to sign out library books. In literacy, the class wrote out spelling list 1 which is located in google stream. They will have a Spelling test on Mon. Sept. 22. Both grades are in the middle of writing a biography about a classmate. They also wrote reading responses to prepare for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation at the end of the month. To prepare for their reading tests, students have reviewed how to answer questions and will look at writing summaries as well as the components of fiction and non-fiction texts. In Drama, the class is presenting their first assignment - a welcome handshake. Their marks are posted in google classroom. In Math, both grades have received curriculum expectations and are working through expectations. To date, we have covered ordering, comparing and representing large numbers. The grade 6s are looking at integers. Both grades reviewed making equivalent fractions last Friday. PLEASE NOTE - students have knowledgehook accounts where math has been assigned for them to complete in addition to work in their blue math folders. THEIR FOLDERS are marked periodically with the expectation that corrections will be made to their work. In Socials, the grade 5s are looking at the Government and People while the grade 6s are looking at Canada's connections in the world community. Students are working through their first art assignment which involves perspective. Great job Grade 5/6s!

REMINDERS

2. The school day starts at 9:15 am. Students are encouraged to come prepared and on time for learning each day at school.

3. Please ensure start of the year forms sent out last week are completed as soon as possible.

4. The Friday Flash, an email sent via the office, contains important notices. Please read through them carefully to stay informed. (ie, about pizza days, PA days and other school activities.)
