Week of Feb. 23 - 27 Blog 22 (Grade 5/6)

Please take note of the following:

REMINDERS

1. Please ensure devices are at school and charged for learning each day.

TESTS

2. The grade 6 will be writing an adding and subtracting proper fractions quiz on Tuesday, Feb. 24. We have been practicing how to find the lowest common denominator and making equivalent fractions in class to help us prepare. As a way of review, students are reminded to complete assigned knowledgehook activities that offer needed practice for skills being introduced and taught in class. A practice EQAO test will be released this week on knowledgehook for grade 6 students.

CLASSWORK

3. In Language, the class co-created an anchor chart for effective listening skills on Friday. It is posted in the stream of our class google classroom. We are also working through how text features help to support our understanding of passages that we read. NOTE - the black history writing task (comparing 2 black figures) is due by the end of this week. We will complete a smaller task for Chinese Heritage Month this week. In Math, we have covered geometric properties of quadrilaterals (gr. 6s) and the characteristics of triangles and angles (gr. 5s). Both grades also finished a coding word problem with a classmate.  On Friday, we reviewed plotting points on the cartesian plane. We also played a game where students physically moved on a grid (tiles on the floor). We will continue that learning on Monday, Feb. 23 and present slides students created with coordinate points. NOTE - completed work is going home in all subject areas as we've commenced new units of study for the second term. In Social Studies, the grade 5s reviewed the resilience of First Nations people to maximize resources in the environment to help them survive. They were assigned a mini task of creating a postcard to communicate how ONE group of First Nation Peoples met ONE need (shelter, clothing or food.) Students are using their notes to complete this assignment. A rubric was given for this task. On the other hand, grade 6s corrected a task to assess their ability to locate places on the globe using lines of latitude and longitude.

SCHOOL EVENTS

4. Please read through the school email - Friday Flash, to be aware of wider school events like information nights and school fundraisers! We appreciate your support in all areas of school life.

Thanks,

Purboo
