Week of Oct. 27 - Oct. 31 Blog 7 (Grade 5/6)

 Please take note of the following:

CLASSWORK

1. We will commence work around Patterning next week to reflect on number as well as geometric patterns, in addition to finding rules and identifying growing and shrinking patterns. Both grades will be able to write and represent number patterns in tables and graphs too. The grade 6s will work on representing numbers patterns algebraically. We will write the fractions test on Monday. Students were working on finishing fraction and decimal review packages last week. Students will be assigned NEW coding activities on code.org. Students also have activities to complete on knowledgehook please. In literacy, students are getting spelling story 2 back as well as their marks for Who is my hero? Please remind your child to return library books to school for day 3 library classes. In reading, we are looking at reading strategies to help us understand texts that we are reading. Students will be getting in-class assignments to help develop their understanding of reading strategies. We have talked about media and using the computer (specifically, using computers for learning and how to be respectful in different learning environments.) Students will receive lesson 6 penmanship this week. We will also be doing working around the character trait of respect. In art class, students are finishing their scene of the a halloween sunset. This project looked at the blending of either cool or warm colours as well as using silhouettes. We are completing a lesson Take me outside - to learn about water use (as the weather allows.) Students are making maps with legends of the school yard outdoor. We will tackle water issues that we observe in group activities  next week.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

2. The Halloween parade is on Fri. Oct. 31. Please read through the Friday flash sent by the office for guidelines around dressing up or not on that day.

TESTS

3. The spelling test will be this Friday, Oct. 31 in light of all the school activities.

INTERVIEWS

4. The parent portal for parent interviews will be opened shortly for you to sign up for a Progress Report Parent Teacher Meeting.

Week of Oct. 20 - 24 Blog 6 (Grade 5/6)

Please take note of the following:

CLASSWORK

1. Students will receive their decimal assessment back. We will work on reviewing our learning in fractions like ordering, comparing, writing fractions and have a test next week Oct. 28. The grade 5/6s are still correcting math work in their blue folders. Students are also coding twice a week in the mornings. In Social Studies, the grade 6s are learning about Canada and the United Nations. The Grade 5s are looking at indigenous ways of governing themselves. In Language, students have started their next assignment - What is a hero? We brainstormed ideas in class and co-created a piece of writing. This shared writing highlighted paragraph writing, an intro and conclusion as well as writing in complete sentences. I will be collecting the spelling story 2 on Monday. In Reading, we reviewed the book The Animal Leader and will be answering questions together in class next week. Penmanship will also resume. Students will be assigned week 5 next week. In Music, the grade 5s received the song, A Wish for Peace. We will present the song at an assembly on Oct. 28 in the primary/junior monthly assembly. Grade 5 students are encouraged to practice learning the song. It is posted in google classroom. The Grade 6s had their first class with the music itinerant teacher. They were assigned instruments and went through class expectations.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

2. Grades are posted in the google classroom. Students can check if they have yet to submit any outstanding items when they log onto google classroom.

SCIENCE

3. Science work is now being posted in google classroom by Mr. McClenaghan.

Week of Oct. 14 - 17 Blog 5 (Grade 5/6)

 Please take note of the following:

CLASSES

1. Music for the grade 6s will be starting shortly. As such, the grade 5s will commence music too. I will be teaching grade 5s in my class as well as grade 5s in Mme Satdeo's class every day 1 after lunch.

SCHOOL EVENTS

2. Please read Friday Flash sent by the school office to stay up to date with school events.

3. This Friday is our Annual Terry Fox Run.

4. Oct. 29 is our School Photo Day.

CLASSWORK

5. Students will be receiving their math tests back between Oct. 14 and Oct. 15. We are currently finishing our focus on decimal numbers (tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.) We will be doing some review work this week like rounding decimals. TEST - students will be writing a short quiz on this content this Friday, Oct. 17. NOTE - most students have done a wonderful job correcting their math corrections in their math doutangs. They also have math activities posted on knowledgehook to practice math skills that are being introduced, taught and reviewed in class. In Language, students have list 2. They were assigned a writing task of creating a story using any 7 of list 2 words. They should add a title, underline spelling words in their story and edit their work to ensure clearly expressed ideas. This spelling assignment is due by Oct. 17. We are doing well with library exchange at school. Students have library exchange today. In Media, we have talked about interacting safely online with others. We are near to wrapping up work around parts of speech. In Social Studies, the grade 5s are looking at governing systems of Aboriginal Peoples while the grade 6s have moved onto the UN and Canada's partnership there. All work around Human Rights and Violations should be done.

REMINDERS

6. There are a few families completing start of year forms. Please complete and return to school asap.

Week of Oct. 6 - 10 Blog 4 (Grade 5/6)

 Please take note of the following:

TRIP

1. Please pay (using school cash online) and give permission for your child to go to Young People's Theater on Oct. 8 (using EMA) if you haven't already done so. We will be leaving the school at 9 am to walk to the train to get to Toronto. Please ensure that your child is at school early on that day. Lunch and Snacks are needed for the excursion.

CLASSWORK

2. We are working on numbers less than 1 (tenths, hundredths and thousandths in math class as well as rounding decimals this week). Students are midway through writing their first math test on place value. Note: knowledgehook questions have been posted online to supplement work that is assigned in class. All students should have coding accounts on code.org. They are working on coding maps on this platform. In language, the book review is due this Thursday, Oct. 9 since there is no school for students on Friday, Oct. 10. In language, students wrote out list 2 which is posted in google classroom. Their land acknowledgements and biography of a classmate will go home this week. In Social Studies, grade 5 students looked at a map of the province of Ontario and its regions while the grade 6s are researching human rights. NOTE - we do have a new schedule and the grade 6 instrumental program should be starting shortly. The class took out library books last day 3. If they go home, they are due back on day 3 of our 5 day cycle.

SCHOOL EVENTS

3. There is no school for students on Friday, Oct. 10 or Monday, Oct. 13.

4. Welcome Back Coffee - All parents/guardians are invited to come to our Welcome Back Coffee on Thursday October 9th from 2:00 - 3:30. This is an opportunity for you to meet school staff and community partners! Please contact the office should you have any questions.

5.  Every Tuesday at lunch Mr. McClenaghan is inviting any interested Grade 5-8 students to have fun with programming problem solving and getting ready to compete in the Beaver Computing contest put on by Waterloo University!
