Week of Jan. 26 - 30 Blog 18 (Grade 5/6)

Please take note of the following:

SCHOOL EVENTS

1. Thanks for your support for Literacy Week last week - many students took home free books to read from the remaining school supply on hand.

2. We are looking to hopefully finalize a skating day for the class. I will update as information becomes available. A parent in our classroom has volunteered to accompany us. Students will need skates and a helmet for the outing.  If all goes well, information will be posted on EMA for parents.

CLASSWORK

3. We are midway through financial literacy. We are learning a lot about money and finance at school. The grade 6s are on canva.com designing a poster about their financial goals. They also summarized the pros and cons to different methods of payment as well as how unexpected expenses are a part of life. While, the grade 5s are completing a restaurant menu mini assignment to add the cost for small transactions. The grade 5s also reviewed different ways to transfer money between individuals. The Grade 5s are currently making a poster to highlight one method to transfer money. Posters for both grades will be due Jan. 30. Our infographs, for Data literacy, are posted outside our classroom on the bulletin board. They are looking good and very informative. They are also due by Jan. 30.  In Social Studies, both classes are having unit tests next Friday, Jan. 30. Folders have been sent home for students to study to prepare for the test. The grade 5s are working on a project with a partner. They are looking at one social or environmental issue in Canada and creating a solution to solve the problem. They need to include how experts, citizens and levels of government can help to solve the problem in their project too. Their project should also include a map if possible. The grade 5s have been working on this project at school during class time. Next week, the grade 6s will look at latitude, longitude etc. on a map and how to locate some of Canada's trading partners geographically. In Language, the class just finished responsibility poems that highlight leadership qualities. They are posted throughout the school. In language, we also looked at the main idea and supporting details in a passage - namely the Black History Month passage posted on Jan. 15 (TDSB's snow day.)

Thanks,

Purboo
